SCRAM Sobriety Ankle Monitors Launched in Illinois

You are here: Home / DUI/DWI / SCRAM Sobriety Ankle Monitors Launched in Illinois

April 17, 2018 by Law Offices of Ronald L. Bell

According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, 2016 statistics reveal that Lake county Illinois has the fourth highest rate of drunk driving arrests in Illinois, with repeat drunk drivers accounting for a third of those arrested.

In response, the state has launched a program known as SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring, that will monitor repeat drunk drivers with alcohol sensing ankle monitors that will ensure 24/7 sobriety.

The hope is that by driving a wedge between alcohol and offenders, the incidences of drunk driving will decrease along with other alcohol fueled crimes, such as domestic abuse.

The program targets repeat, high risk offenders by making the ankle bracelet a condition of bond. Offenders convicted of repeat Illinois DUI, or other alcohol-related offenses, may be monitored for sobriety for up to 180 days using the anklet.

Of course, offenders will likely pick up the tab for the initial installation of the device, which can run anywhere from $50 to $100, along with the daily monitoring fee of 10-12 dollars. The high cost of a DUI conviction will now be that much more.
