Once declared one of Milwaukee County’s worst deadbeat dads, a personal trainer from California was recently sentenced to five years of probation for failing to pay nearly a quarter-of-a-million in child support and interest.
The 50-year-old man was a used car salesman in Illinois when he met and fathered a child with a Milwaukee woman back in 1993. After the relationship ended, he never really looked back. He made a few initial child support payments, but pretty quickly just moved on with his life.
Well, you’ve heard the old saying “the law never sleeps”. Two years ago, county officials and prosecutors caught up with him in California where he had been working at a high-end country club making good money.
He was whisked back to Wisconsin where he just completed a 19 month jail sentence. Despite his wishes to reunite with his 7-year-old son and most recent girlfriend in California, the man has been ordered to stay in Milwaukee County, submit to GPS monitoring and pay up.
During a divorce or legal separation, payment of child support is a very sensitive and important issue. One parent may worry about not receiving enough child support or have concerns about timely payments. The other may feel that the payments ordered exceed what they are capable of handling.
Ideally, parents will work together and continue to communicate on issues affecting their children, but sometimes it is necessary to seek the help of a skilled negotiator or effective trial advocacy attorney to make sure all parties are treated fairly. If you have a concern regarding child support or custody, contact the Lake County, Illinois Law Offices of Ronald L. Bell for help today.
