Child Support Clerical Error Sends Dad to Jail

Keeping track of child support payments is important. Even in cases where you have an arrangement with your employer to deduct child support from your paycheck, there can be problems. Just recently, a father spent a week in jail over a clerical, child-support withholding error made by his employer. The employer admitted that a mistake had been made in deducting child support payments from the fathers pay, which caused the father’s payments to become delinquent. The father was jailed June 24 by the order of a Harris County civil court judge, but eventually released when the clerical error was discovered and the father paid all the money the employer failed to withhold. In addition to spending the week in jail, the dad is now paying approximately $10,000 in attorney fees, incurred during the proceedings.
