Official Same-Sex Marriages Will Have to Wait Until Monday Morning

The Illinois same-sex marriage law takes effect June 1, 2014, which falls on a Sunday. Same-sex couples wishing to tie the knot on the first day of the law, will apparently have to wait until Monday, June 2, to get an official marriage license issued by many collar counties.
However,same-sex couples intent on marrying the first day of the law may proceed with a civil union ceremenony, and convert it into a marriage license Monday morning with the date of their civil union. The same will apply to others who decide to convert their civil union into a marriage license after June 1. According to the state statute, the converted marriage license will be deemed effective on the date of the civil union ceremony, as long as the “civil union has not been dissolved and there is no pending proceeding to dissolve the civil union.”
