Divorce more common than ever, especially among older couples

A failed marriage is a possibility for anyone. Statistics seem to back up this statement again and again. No matter how old a couple is, or how long they have been together, they may realize at any point in their marriage that their differences are irreconcilable. When this happens, it is often best for couples going through a divorce to put together a strong divorce strategy.

To illustrate the point that in Illinois and throughout the rest of the U.S. divorce is a possibility for just about anyone, all it takes is a look at a recently released divorce study. Prior to this newly released study, it was commonly believed that divorce rates have been falling since the 1980s. Based on the study’s findings, this may not be the case.

According to the new study, divorce rates are rising, especially among older couples. While people in their 20s are, in fact, divorcing less, the divorce rate among older couples is rapidly increasing. Some speculate that this is the result of the ways in which baby boomers approached marriage. Baby boomers existed in a social climate that all but required many to get married, as marriage was generally expected and many felt pressured to marry early. With the changing social atmosphere, marriage became less mandatory.

Much as divorce can happen to just about any couple, so are the components of divorce similar for most couples. Property division, alimony, child support and child custody are among the family law issues that many couples will have to settle. Some of these issues can be complex and it is often prudent to seek out help in the process of settling these matters.
