Senate Bill 57 heralding various changes to Illinois family law was approved by Governor Rauner July 21, 2015. The changes will take effect January 1, 2016. The new law includes new provisions for divorce in Illinois, such as defining the grounds for seeking a divorce, adjusting the required separation period, and various asset valuation topics to facilitate property division. The new law also takes up topics related to child custody including the language used when referring to ‘custody’, relocation procedures, grandparent and step-parent rights, and the many issues regarding parental plans.
