How to Prepare for Divorce

Looking for a divorce planner? Two Chicago area ex-wives who divorced the same man have joined together to help others navigate the sometimes overwhelming process of divorce.

Having a mutual ex, divorces and other uncanny things in common, the two women decided to write a how-to book, “The Ex-Wives’ Guide to Divorce: How to Navigate Everything from Heartache and Finances to Child Custody”.

In a recent Chicago Tribune article the women explained their motivation for the book:

“When I was going through my divorce, I Googled ‘divorce planners’,” one said. “A handful of results popped up.”
“For ‘wedding planners(?)…tens of thousands.”
“We basically wrote the book we wish we would have had.”

Hearing the stories from those who have experienced divorce can be helpful. Going through a divorce can be difficult and few know how to prepare.

The best advice is to seek the help of a knowledgeable family law attorney early in the process so that you can take the necessary steps to protect yourself financially and make decisions that are in your best interest and that of your children.

You will likely have specific concerns that an experienced divorce attorney can help you work through. You may have questions regarding what documentation you should gather ahead of time for the purposes of marital asset and debt division. You may wonder if their are consequences to leaving the marital home.

Many clients with children need information regarding the laws regarding parenting time in Illinois (child custody and visitation) and have questions regarding child support, spousal maintenance and temporary motions to access funds or secure custody of children while the divorce is in progress.
