With the upcoming holidays, businesses and families are preparing to welcome guests to celebrate. Every responsible host knows its only a great time if everyone returns home safely, without incident.
Statistics reveal that the holiday season is a particularly deadly time due to the increased number of drunk drivers. According to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), the 2012 Christmas and New year Holidays accounted for over two hundred traffic fatalities attributed to drunk driving.
Conviction for driving under the influence in Illinois can include incarceration, fines up into the thousands, attorney and court fees and lengthy license suspensions. If someone is injured, the consequences are catastrophic.
Fortunately, drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable if you plan ahead. While making plans to entertain family and friends this season, consider a few tips:
- As guests RSVP to your invitations, discuss options for getting home safely such as a ride with a non-drinking designated driver (rideshare service, public transportation, cab and the like).
- At the party, highlight the food – not the drinks. Provide non-alcoholic beverages or mocktails for those who prefer not to drink or are designated drivers.
- Be observant – In the event some of your guests have too much to drink, have the numbers of a taxi service or rideshare app on hand or be prepared to offer your guests a spare room.
- Having taken some care to safeguard your guests – have a great time!
